How It Works

Warm Canister on Top

Place the sending canister in a warm spot — like the sun or in your hand. Fuel flows from warm (top) to cool (bottom).

Cool Canister on Bottom

Shade, cool water, or a breeze helps. A colder receiving canister creates pressure that pulls fuel down.

Connect & Open

Attach both canisters to the FlipFuel® device. Open the valve to begin the transfer. Gravity and temperature do the work.

Don’t Overfill

Always weigh your canisters. Never exceed the original full weight of the receiving canister.

FlipFuel® FAQs

Will this just equalize the pressure between canisters?

Not if you follow the correct steps. While it may seem like the FlipFuel® device simply equalizes pressure, successful fuel transfer actually relies on a temperature differential between the two canisters.

Fuel moves from the warmer canister (higher pressure) to the cooler canister (lower pressure), consistent with Boyle’s Law. That’s why it’s important to warm the donor canister slightly—such as by leaving it in the sun—and chill the receiving canister to encourage flow.

For a quick walkthrough, watch our 45-second video on how to transfer fuel with FlipFuel®.

What kind of fuel can I transfer?

FlipFuel® works with small, threaded isobutane canisters used for backpacking stoves. Only transfer between the same type.

Can I accidentally overfill a canister?

Yes — we recommend using a digital scale to weigh canisters before and after transfer.

Does it work with all fuel canister brands?

It supports most threaded isobutane canisters. It’s not compatible with larger green propane tanks.

How do I recycle empty fuel cans?

After transferring fuel and ensuring the canister is empty, punch a hole in the empty can and recycle it per your local rules. A recycling tool like this can help.
